Unofficial D&D 5e Character Sheet for Kanka Player Guide - Release 1.0 ABOUT THIS SHEET The Adventurer's Ledger is a customizable D&D Fifth Edition character sheet for Kanka. It records character statistics, combat details, spells, equipment, and resource use. Spells and special features can link to existing Kanka Ability entries so you can open the full descriptions without copying them into the sheet. The calculations and rest automation are based primarily on 2014 D&D 5e rules. Some labels, including Species and Heroic Inspiration, also accommodate 2024 characters. Use the rules agreed upon by your DM. Values described below are expected inputs, not strict limits enforced by Kanka. Most fields are editable by clicking their displayed values; some calculations refresh only after reloading the character sheet.

GETTING STARTED

1. Open your character in Kanka and apply The Adventurer's Ledger character-sheet properties.

2. Enter your class, level, species, ability scores, HP, AC, and other basic information.

3. Set saving throw and skill proficiencies using the numeric editor (see the circle key below).

4. If you cast spells, set your spell-slot maximums and spellcasting ability.

5. Add links to existing Kanka Ability entries for spells, class features, species traits, and combat abilities.

6. Configure resource counters only for abilities that need them.

7. Save and refresh to check your calculated bonuses and links.

IMPORTANT VALUE KEY

- Most numbers should be entered as plain digits, without a + sign or words, unless the field is a free-text field or an extra modifier that can be negative.

- Filled burgundy pips mean EXPENDED or USED (spell slots, charges, and resource points).

- An empty pip means AVAILABLE. - Enter the amount USED, not the amount REMAINING.

- A blank linked-Ability slot stays hidden until you fill it.

1. CHARACTER INFORMATION AND XP

Character name: Taken from the name of your Kanka character entry.

Level: Enter a whole number from 1 to 20. The sheet calculates proficiency bonus from level.

Class, subclass, species, background, player, and alignment: Enter descriptive text.

Experience Points (experience): Enter total XP earned, such as 3500. There is no XP progress bar or automatic level-up.

Proficiency bonus by level: Levels 1-4: +2 Levels 5-8: +3 Levels 9-12: +4 Levels 13-16: +5 Levels 17-20: +6 2.

ABILITY SCORES, SAVING THROWS, AND SKILLS

Ability scores: Enter the actual score (typically 3-20 for player characters; the sheet accommodates 1-30), NOT the modifier. Example: Wisdom 16 produces a +3 modifier.

Saving throw circles: Empty circle = 0 = not proficient. Black pip = 1 = proficient. Click the circle to open Kanka's numeric editor. Do NOT enter the total saving throw bonus; it is calculated from your ability modifier and proficiency bonus.

Skill circles: Empty circle = 0 = untrained. Black pip = 1 = proficient. Red pip = 2 = expertise (double proficiency). Again, enter the proficiency rank rather than the total skill bonus. The sheet calculates the total. Example: A level 4 cleric with Wisdom 16 and proficient Perception has Perception +5 and Passive Perception 15, before any additional adjustments.

3. COMBAT AND HIT POINTS

Armor Class: Enter your FINAL AC, including armor, shields, and applicable effects. The Shield AC Bonus field is for reference and is not added automatically.

Speed: Enter feet, e.g. 30.

Size: Enter text such as Small or Medium.

Initiative Bonus: Enter only an EXTRA modifier beyond Dexterity. Use 0 if none.

Passive Perception Bonus: Enter only an EXTRA modifier beyond the calculated value. Use 0 if none.

Max HP: Your hit point maximum (0 or more). Current HP: Your present HP, usually between 0 and your maximum.

Temporary HP: A separate nonnegative number; do not add it to Current HP.

Hit Dice Total: Prefer a single die expression such as 4d8, or an integer such as 4.

Hit Dice Spent: Number already expended, from 0 up to the total.

Hit Dice Remaining: Enter matching notation, such as 3d8, or a remaining integer; long-rest automation recognizes simple matching values. More complicated multiclass Hit Dice may need manual adjustment.

Death Saves: Three successes and three failures, each counted 0-3. Click a pip to change the count. If a pip cannot save through Kanka, use the adjacent number editor. The long-rest button clears these counters when it restores HP.

4. ADVENTURING

Inspiration / Heroic Inspiration: 0 = none, 1 = available. Use the interpretation for your rules version.

Exhaustion: 0-6 on the sheet's 2014 rules baseline. The sheet tracks the value; check your DM's rules for the effects.

5. SPELL SLOTS

Each spell level from 1 to 9 has:

- Max: The number of slots available at that level, normally 0-4 for standard spellcasters (the display supports up to 9 pips).

- Used: How many slots at that level are spent, from 0 up to Max. Example: Four level-1 slots, two spent = Max 4, Used 2. Two filled pips show the spent slots. Clicking a filled pip reduces the spent count. A standard Long Rest clears the used counters; a Short Rest does not.

Warlock Pact Magic and other special short-rest spell resources should be represented as separate resource pools if their recovery differs from ordinary spell slots.

6. WEAPONS AND DAMAGE CANTRIPS

There are six editable attack rows.

Enter: - Weapon/cantrip: Name, e.g. Longsword or Sacred Flame. - Attack bonus/DC: Text such as +5 or DEX save DC 13. - Damage and type: Text such as 1d8+3 slashing. - Notes: Range, finesse, special effects, etc. These attack rows are reference text; they do not automatically recalculate when you level up.

7. LINKING SPELLS AND ABILITIES

The sheet can refer to Kanka Ability entries for: - Spells: 24 slots, with a spell level and linked Ability name.

- Class Features: 12 linked slots.

- Species Traits: 8 linked slots.

- Combat Abilities: 12 linked slots, for combat-related traits from any source.

You can place the same Kanka Ability entry in more than one section (for example, both Class Features and Combat Abilities) without copying the description. To link one:

1. Open the existing Ability entry in Kanka.

2. Use its Copy advanced mention option.

3. Paste the copied reference into an empty spell or feature field. It may look like [entity:123], but you must copy your own real entry reference.

4. Save, then refresh the character sheet. Alternatively, enter @ in the character's full Properties tab and select the Ability from Kanka's suggestions.

The inline editor on the character sheet may not provide @ autocomplete.

The rendered link can be clicked to open the Ability entry; hover previews depend on Kanka's native behaviour. Spell levels: 0 = cantrip; 1-9 = spell level. Only filled spell rows are shown in the normal view. Expand Add linked spells to enter more.

The sheet does not automatically prepare, learn, or import spells from your character's other Kanka records.

8. SPELLCASTING

Spellcasting Ability: Enter the lowercase ability name, e.g. wisdom, intelligence, or charisma. Other valid ability names are strength, dexterity, and constitution.

Spellcasting Modifier: Calculated automatically. Spell Save DC: 8 + proficiency bonus + spellcasting modifier + Spell DC Extra.

Spell Attack Bonus: Proficiency bonus + spellcasting modifier + Spell Attack Extra.

Spell DC Extra and Spell Attack Extra: Signed numbers for additional bonuses or penalties only. Usually 0. Do not type the final DC or attack bonus here.

9. INDIVIDUAL ABILITY USES

A limited-use ability can have its own counter. Use the Configure ability uses and costs area under Class Features, Species Traits, or Combat Abilities. The first 8 Class Feature links, first 8 Combat Ability links, and first 3 Species Trait links can have resource settings. The remaining linked slots are reference-only.

Uses Max: The maximum number of individual uses; 0 means no charge pips. Up to 20 pips can be displayed. Uses Used: Number of uses expended, from 0 through Uses Max.

Recharge/Recovery: Enter Short Rest, Long Rest, Dawn, Manual, or another descriptive condition.

Resource Pool: Optional name of a shared pool if the ability spends points or dice from a common resource.

Cost: How much of that shared resource the ability uses each time. Enter a nonnegative whole number.

Example - Action Surge: Ability link = the Kanka Action Surge entry Uses Max = 1 Uses Used = 0 before use, 1 after use Recovery = Short Rest Resource Pool and Cost = leave blank/0 For an ability that uses shared points, you can leave Uses Max at 0 and instead specify the pool name and Cost.

Shared point expenditures are NOT deducted automatically when you use an Ability link. Adjust the shared pool's Used counter yourself.

10. SHARED RESOURCE POOLS

There are six optional resource pools, for examples such as Ki, Focus, Superiority Dice, Sorcery Points, or Channel Divinity.

Name: Descriptive text such as Ki Points.

Max: Total available points/dice/charges, preferably 0-20 for a fully visible pip display.

Used: Amount already expended, from 0 to Max.

Recovery: Short Rest, Long Rest, Dawn, Manual, etc. Example - Ki Points: Name = Ki Points Max = 4 Used = 1 (three remaining) Recovery = Short Rest A full pip means used. If a linked ability costs 1 Ki point, manually increase the Ki Points Used value by 1 when you use it.

The ability Cost label is informational, not an automatic deduction.

11. RECOVERY SETTINGS AND REST BUTTONS

For automatic rest recovery, use the words Short Rest or Long Rest in the resource's Recovery field. Capitalization does not matter. Short Rest button:

- Clears Used counters for individual ability uses and shared pools marked Short Rest.

- Does NOT automatically heal HP, spend Hit Dice, restore ordinary spell slots, or clear death saves.

- Roll/spend Hit Dice and adjust your HP manually after the rest if applicable.

Long Rest button (2014 rules baseline):

- Restores Current HP to Max HP.

- Clears Temporary HP.

- Clears ordinary spent spell slots.

- Clears death-save counters when HP is restored.

- Restores ability charges and resource pools marked Short Rest OR Long Rest.

- Regains up to half your maximum Hit Dice (minimum one), when simple total/spent Hit Dice values can be read.

- Optionally lowers Exhaustion by 1 if you tick the food-and-water checkbox before resting.

The sheet will not apply a long rest when current HP is 0 under its 2014 rules check. Recovery values such as Dawn, Manual, and Special are not automatically reset. Before applying a rest, review the confirmation dialog. Refresh afterward to verify that the values were saved in Kanka. If Kanka reports that it cannot save a particular property, make the change through the regular property editor instead. If only some changes saved, inspect the values before trying again. The rest buttons do not reset XP, Inspiration, coins, ability scores, or maximum resource values.

12. ARMOR, EQUIPMENT AND MONEY

Armor Training: Click the diamonds to edit each category (Light, Medium, Heavy, Shields). 0 = not trained, 1 = trained. The numeric values are hidden in the visual display.

Weapon Training and Tool Training: Free-text lists of proficiencies. Equipment: Free-text list of carried items.

Attunement: Three slots for attuned magic items. Leave unused slots blank.

Coins: Enter nonnegative numbers for CP, SP, EP, GP, and PP without currency letters in the number field.

13. DEFENSES, CHARACTER STORY AND NOTES

Resistances: Free text describing damage types you resist, e.g. fire damage.

Immunities: Free text naming immunities to damage and/or conditions; specify separately (e.g. poison damage; poisoned condition).

Weaknesses/Vulnerabilities: Free text for damage vulnerabilities or situational weaknesses, e.g. radiant damage vulnerability or Sunlight Sensitivity.

These defenses are descriptive. The sheet does not automatically adjust incoming damage.

Backstory & Personality, Languages, Feats, and Additional Notes: Free text. Alignment also appears in the story section. Appearance from older versions remains in the underlying properties but is no longer displayed.

COMMON QUESTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING

Why is a skill bonus too high? Check the skill's numeric proficiency value. 2 means expertise, not ordinary proficiency.

Why did my AC not change when I added a shield? Armor Class is entered as the final total. Shield Bonus is a reference field only.

Why do the spell-slot pips appear reversed? Filled pips indicate slots USED. Used 2 out of Max 4 means two slots remain.

Why doesn't typing @ on the sheet find an Ability? The inline Kanka editor may not offer mention autocomplete. Copy the real advanced mention from the Ability entry, or use the full character Properties tab.

Why is an ability's Cost not spending resource points automatically? Cost is a reminder; change the shared pool Used value manually.

Why didn't a rest reset a pool? Check that Max is greater than 0, that Recovery says Short Rest or Long Rest, and that the change was actually saved. Dawn and Manual do not auto-reset.

Why don't calculations update immediately? Save and refresh the character sheet. Some bonuses are calculated during rendering.
